It could be the 2nd-oldest enterprise college in the U.S., but the University of California—Berkeley (Haas) continues to discover new methods to improve its company university choices. On Tuesday, the faculty introduced that its two-year undergraduate business enterprise plan will come to be a 4-calendar year program, many thanks to a $30 million donation—the most significant the faculty has ever received.

“Currently, Haas undergraduate students really feel a sense of urgency to choose edge of many chances inside a two-12 months timeframe,” Emma Hayes Daftary, assistant dean of undergraduate programs at Haas, tells Fortune. “The 4-calendar year working experience will allow for our students to emphasis on staying learners and learning, alternatively than devoting time to a very aggressive application method halfway by their college or university expertise.”

In recognition of the gift from Haas alumnus Warren “Ned” Spieker and his wife, Carol, the four-12 months undergraduate program will be referred to as the Spieker Undergraduate Enterprise Plan, with the 1st four-yr cohort enrolling in August 2024.

In advance of this change, learners used to the Haas undergraduate system as sophomores and enrolled as juniors. Incoming college students will now have the option to implement directly to Haas and enter as a freshman. For now, present UC Berkeley students and transfer pupils can nonetheless use as sophomores.

“A 4-12 months undergraduate business enterprise knowledge will supply extraordinary new opportunities for students,” Ned Spieker, a Haas College Board member and founder and previous chairman and CEO of Spieker Houses, said in a assertion saying the donation. “My hope is that this present will support make a method that’s next-to-none in the entire world, cementing Haas as the major undergraduate business enterprise university for generations to occur.” Fortune ranks Haas as owning the No. 13 complete-time MBA program in the U.S..

The application process and curriculum

Even though Berkeley Haas is doubling the amount of time put in in the small business main for undergraduate college students, the curriculum of the program will not improve. Rather, the college is discovering the possibility to include on an upper-stage capstone leadership training course, Daftary suggests.

In addition to the standard core curriculum, freshman and sophomore students will participate in co-curricular pursuits meant to support them acclimate to higher education, take a look at career options, and perform on leadership improvement.

Candidates for the plan should “demonstrate an interest in business—whether that be as a result of their extracurriculars or as a result of completion of coursework that aligns with the organization curriculum,” Daftary suggests. To earn admission to the plan, candidates will be evaluated on tutorial performance and routines, but the university does not think about standardized test scores, like the ACT or SAT.

Recent UC pupils will be able to go on to implement for admission to the Haas undergraduate system, but as the college additional transitions to the four-calendar year method, there will be fewer places for Berkeley learners coming into the key as juniors, Daftary adds.

How the gift is building influence

The $30 million gift from the Spiekers is five-fold: It will go toward scholarship enhancement, tutorial advising, student experiences, co-curricular functions, and classroom technological innovation.

In each and every undergraduate class, 3 or four students will be invited to the Spieker Students software, which supplies further scholarship dollars to learners who may have “financial barriers” to attending the college. “For these pupils, the enlargement of the program—and the monetary guidance provided—will improve their prospect for upward mobility by means of mastery of company fundamentals and accessibility to internships and occupation chances by the Haas alumni network,” Daftary claims.

The Spieker donation will also go towards growing tutorial advising, enterprise prep classes, mental health and fitness providers, marketing and admissions, alumni outreach, and new pupil orientation. In addition, Haas will get the job done to present much more experiential workshops, study prospects, social gatherings, and conferences and competitions. Lastly, the school will up grade its undergraduate classrooms with new audio, visual, and media gear.

“This is a historic, game-shifting expense in undergraduate company training,” Berkeley Haas Dean Ann E. Harrison said in a statement announcing the donation. ”We are so thrilled that Ned and Carol have designed a dedication to Haas towards making the upcoming technology of enterprise leaders.”
